The Chapter 8 course teaches the basics of working on a public highway where one may be required to close roads, erect signage, set up pedestrian walk ways and set up roadside furniture (Signs, cones etc)

This is a one day course consisting of a morning session where one learns about:

 

Health and Safety, including the use of Hi Visibility clothing, awareness on the highway, 

 

Legislation in regard to Chapter 8, including the Road Traffic Act 1988, the Traffic Signs and General Directions Act 2016, and the Health and Safety Act work Act 1974 as well as RIDDOR.

 

Planning Road Closures including the production of Plans,  liaison with other services and businesses, and the council, submitting applications etc. 

 

Dealing with emergencies including counter terrorism planning (HVMs "Hostile Vehicle Mitigation"), Dealing with Accidents and ETROs (Emergency Traffic Regulation Orders).

 

The afternoon session the student will be introduced to signage and will be shown how to place cones and signage on a road and as part of their assessment they will be expected to plan and build a road closure.

Finally the day will end with a short test covering what they have been taught.
